Air conditioning repair is one of those services you don’t want to wait on once you know you need it. You might be tempted to wait–after all if your system is still running and giving you some cool air, you may as well wait, right?
Well, not quite… ignoring AC repair needs risks running into a completely broken down air conditioner when you need it the most–right in the middle of summer.
We encourage all homeowners to take care of their cooling systems as soon as they realize they need a repair. But how do you know when you need one?! Read on to find out.
Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Keeping You Cool
You might not think this is a problem that homeowners would ignore, but surprisingly, it is. Especially if the air is somewhat cool. They often attribute it to the high heat of summer, assuming they just don’t feel as cool because of how hot it is outside.
Temperatures spike and can definitely lead you to believe that your AC is acting up for that reason. There is a temperature differential to keep in mind–your air conditioner cannot cool you down any further than 20° of what the temperature is outside. However, if you’re within that temperature differential and you’re still struggling to keep cool, it’s a sign that something is amiss with your AC.
Your Energy Bills Have Spiked
Do you not-so-eagerly anticipate your energy bills during the summer months? Your air conditioner is in place to keep you cool and comfortable all season long, but it should not have to cost an arm and a leg to do so.
Take a look at your energy bills and compare them to this same time last year. Are they significantly higher? If so, it’s a sign that something is causing your air conditioner to work inefficiently, and that something needs to be checked out by a professional.
The AC Is Cycling On and Off Rapidly
This is what’s known as short-cycling, when your air conditioning system turns on, runs for a very brief time, then cycles right back off before completing a full cooling cycle. But then it turns back on again shortly after. This whole time, it can’t effectively cool down your home because it can’t run long enough to do so.
The heat trapped in your home will keep signaling the thermostat to turn your air conditioner on, however this short-cycling will just wear down your air conditioner faster, leading to increased wear and tear, increased repair needs, and even potentially premature replacement.
You Hear Strange Noises
Air conditioners aren’t the quietest things you can have on your home’s property. But you likely know the average noises it makes in a day. If you hear anything abnormal, it’s cause for concern. This can include screeching, squealing, banging, or even hissing that indicates a refrigerant leak.
The best thing you can do for your system’s functionality and your family’s comfort is to give our team a call the moment you notice any of the signs mentioned above.
