Springtime is right around the corner, and you know as well as we do that means warmer temperatures are right around the corner too! However, if our winter weather was any indication this year, mother nature can surprise us with chillier-than-average conditions.

Whether we have another unexpected cold spell in the coming weeks or if you just want to ensure that your heater is fully functional next fall when you need it again, now is the best time to manage any end-of-season heating repair needs you might have. Of course, if you had professional maintenance done for your heater this past fall, and if you managed any pending repair needs at the time, then you’re likely in great shape and won’t have any unexpected furnace repair needs before the season is up–unless of course, we’re talking about a very old heating system.

The first thing you probably think if someone tells you that your air ducts might have damage is, “Okay, well, isn’t that what duct tape is for?”

We totally understand this misconception. However, perhaps disappointedly, duct tape has an inappropriate name. It’s actually pretty useless when it comes to HVAC air ducts.

The reason for this is that when duct tape gets hot and cools off repeatedly, it becomes brittle within a few months and starts chipping and flaking off. And since the temperature of your ductwork fluctuates as you run your HVAC systems, this is clearly a problem!

So, that means the solution is professional duct sealing. But, how do you know you need it, and is it really that necessary? Read on to find out!

Why You Should Care about Cracked Heat Exchangers in a Gas Furnace

Monday, February 22nd, 2021

We should start off by saying, gas furnaces are not inherently dangerous appliances. You should never panic just because you use a gas-powered appliance in your home. However, just like any other appliance or home comfort system, your gas furnace needs to be well cared for so you can avoid it becoming potentially dangerous.

The fact of the matter is, it produces combustion gasses when it operates and those combustion gases have the potential to lead to harmful consequences, such as carbon monoxide exposure. Treat your gas furnace well, and you should have few worries about its operation.

But an ill-maintained furnace could potentially suffer from expedited wear and tear, leading to a cracked heat exchanger, which is where problems happen. This is a more common problem in aging systems (10-15 years old) but is still something you should be aware of if you have a gas-powered system, no matter the age. So, what’s a heat exchanger and why is a cracked one bad news?

Even though temperatures are starting to warm up, and we never experience the bitter cold temperatures as our friends in the North or Midwest do, we still have some time before we shut off our heaters for the season, right? So don’t you want to make sure that you are using yours as affordably as possible?

Using your HVAC system can be relatively expensive. After all, HVAC system use accounts for half of all the energy used in your home. It can be easy to assume that to save energy, you simply shouldn’t use these systems unless you really need them. We are here to tell you that you deserve comfort, period. So keep using that heater, but do so a little more wisely. Read on to learn how!
