Here’s How You Prepare Your AC for Summer

The summer season is fast approaching, and before you know it, you’ll be retreating inside your home to escape the heat at the barbeque. At least for a little bit. Let’s make sure your air conditioner is up to snuff before summer rolls around.

Lake County air conditioning and heating services help you prepare ahead of time, but beyond calling for maintenance and repairs when needed, this is what you can do to help get your AC as ready as possible for the season.

Change Your Air Filters

The airflow inside your AC is mission-critical to, well, everything you expect from your air conditioner. Change your air filters to remove air resistance and help air flow through properly, all while blocking debris and dust from sticking to your condenser coils.

Your air filters should be changed every 30-60 days depending on use. You know your cooling habits better than anyone else–how often are you running your AC? The more you run it, the more dust it catches from the air, and the faster you need to swap it out for a new one.

Run a Quick Visual Inspection

Does anything look “off” about your air conditioner? Whether it’s the inside of your home or out? Check vents, look at the outdoor cabinet, and see if there’s anything out of place. Most commonly, you’ll see debris near the cabinet, maybe a clogged condensate drain line, and hopefully that’s all.

Unfortunately, one thing you can’t visibly see is a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks can be the cause of irreparable damage if you run your AC on low refrigerant levels. Not only is refrigerant toxic, but it’s indicative of a much larger problem that you can’t DIY your way out of. Get a technician out to your home ASAP.

Clean the Condenser Coils

Your condenser coils can build up dust, even when you have a proper air filter in place. It’s still going to happen, just at a slower rate. Clear them off to prevent that dust from insulating the component and preventing it from doing its job in the process. You can clean off your coils, but there are risks associated, that’s why we recommend a tune-up.

Scheduling a Tune-Up Anyway

Tune-up, maintenance–whatever you want to call it–is ultimately what prepares your air conditioner for summer. Your AC needs more than an air filter and some cleaning; it requires lubrication for moving metal parts, thorough inspection, an electrical check-up, and more.

At the end of the day, our technicians are trained for this. They know how to get the job done fast, efficiently, and with proper safety protocols in place.

Summer’s Fast Approaching

You know what you need to do to get your air conditioner ready for summer, so start testing it and make sure it’s ready to go before you truly need it. You might need to schedule some maintenance before the hotter days are upon us, but you should act fast–this is the busy season.
